American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter
Position Overview
BETA Systems International seeks certified American Sign Language interpreters to provide educational interpreting services at the University of Texas at San Antonio. This contract supports Student Disability Services across UTSA's tri-campus system.
You will interpret for deaf and hard-of-hearing students in academic courses, campus activities, and university events. Work includes both scheduled assignments and on-demand requests throughout the academic year.
Required Qualifications
Certification Requirements
You must hold current, valid certification from one of the following organizations:
- Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)
- National Association of the Deaf (NAD)
- Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI)
You must provide proof of certification before assignment.
Professional Requirements
- Adherence to RID Code of Professional Conduct
- Compliance with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
- Successful criminal background check completion
- Reliable transportation and valid Texas driver's license
Technical Requirements
- Proficiency with virtual meeting platforms (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Canvas)
- Access to reliable high-speed internet for virtual assignments
- Professional-grade webcam and audio equipment for remote interpreting
Essential Responsibilities
Interpreting Services
You will provide sign language interpretation services for:
- Undergraduate and graduate-level courses
- Laboratory sessions and field experiences
- Campus meetings and conferences
- Athletic events and extracurricular activities
- Academic advisement sessions
- University ceremonies and special events
Assignment Types
Work includes:
- Educational interpreting for college-level content
- Team interpreting for complex or extended assignments
- Oral interpreting and transliterating services
- Tactile interpreting for DeafBlind students (when qualified)
- Cultural mediation in educational contexts
Professional Standards
You will:
- Arrive 15 minutes before scheduled assignments
- Maintain confidentiality of all student information
- Dress in business casual attire with solid colors that contrast with skin tone
- Submit accurate timesheets and service documentation
- Communicate schedule changes promptly to the coordinator
- Participate in professional development activities

- UTSA Downtown Campus
- UTSA Hemisfair Campus
- Virtual platforms for remote instruction
Schedule Characteristics
- Semester-based scheduling with consistent assignments
- Day, evening, and weekend availability required
- Holiday work when university is in session
- Flexible schedule based on course offerings
- Assignment durations range from one hour to full semester courses
